The wellington boot — commonly shortened to “wellie” — has strong roots in British footwear history. The style is named after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, who popularised a refined leather boot silhouette in the early nineteenth century that replaced heavier military boots. This boot evolved over time into a practical, waterproof rubber form as rubber-processing techniques advanced in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
