2. Information We Collect

We may collect information about you in a variety of ways. The information we may collect includes:

Account Information

When you create an account, with your email address and a password or by signing in with Google, we collect your email address, first name and last name. This information is used to create and manage your account and, if your email matches a brand’s contact email or website, to link you to that brand’s listing.

Contact Form Information

When you contact us through our contact form, we collect your first name, last name, email address, and message. If you choose “List my brand”, we also collect your brand name, website URL, brand contact email, and country so we can review and create a directory listing. This information is used to respond to your inquiries and improve our services.

Usage Data

When you use our service, we automatically collect certain information, such as your IP address, browser type, operating system, access times, the pages you view, the brand websites and products you click through to, and words entered in our map search that we could not match. This information helps us understand how our service is used, count clicks for brands, and improve user experience.

Community Activity Data

When you upvote brands on our platform, we store which brands you have upvoted and on which category page, linked to your account or, if you are not signed in, to your IP address. This information is used to rank brands on category pages and show recently upvoted brands.

Donation Information

If you choose to make a donation to support our platform, payment processing is handled by third-party payment processors. We do not directly collect or store your financial information such as credit card numbers. We may receive information about your donation (such as your email address, donation amount and date) from the payment processor to enable voting privileges and maintain donation records.

Sponsorship Payments

If you buy a sponsorship for a brand, payment is handled by Stripe. We send Stripe your account email and store the email used at checkout, your Stripe customer and subscription references, your plan and its billing dates so we can apply and manage the sponsorship. We never see or store your card details.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to provide, maintain, and improve our services. Specifically, we use your information to:

  • Create and manage your account and authenticate you when you sign in
  • Enable you to upvote brands and participate in community features
  • Display community favourites and brand rankings based on user votes
  • Respond to your contact form submissions and inquiries
  • Process donations and sponsorships, and enable voting privileges associated with donations
  • Monitor and analyse usage patterns to improve our website and services
  • Ensure the security and integrity of our platform
  • Comply with legal obligations and protect our rights
  • Send you emails you need to use our service, such as account verification and password resets
  • Send you our monthly newsletter if you subscribe and confirm your email address. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every newsletter

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not send marketing to individuals without their consent; we may email brands at their business contact address about their listing and new features, and they can ask us to stop.

We may share information we have collected about you in certain situations. Your information may be disclosed as follows:

By Law or to Protect Rights

If we believe the release of information about you is necessary to respond to legal process, to investigate or remedy potential violations of our policies, or to protect the rights, property, and safety of others, we may share your information as permitted or required by any applicable law, rule, or regulation.

Third-Party Service Providers

We may share your information with third parties that perform services for us or on our behalf, including:

  • Google OAuth: When you sign in with Google, your authentication is handled by Google. We receive your email address, name, and profile information from Google to create your account.
  • Stripe: When you make a donation or buy a sponsorship, payment information is processed by Stripe. We do not have access to your full payment details.
  • Hosting, Email and Monitoring Services: Heroku and Neon (hosting and database), Amazon Web Services (images), Resend (email), Cloudflare (spam protection and cookie-free visit statistics), Sentry (error monitoring), xAI (AI tools that help us review brand applications, news and suggested shop locations), and OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim (place searches on our map).

These third-party service providers are contractually obligated to protect your information and use it only for the purposes we specify.

Business Transfers

We may share or transfer your information in connection with, or during negotiations of, any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business to another company.

5. Security of Your Information

We use administrative, technical, and physical security measures to help protect your personal information. While we have taken reasonable steps to secure the personal information you provide to us, please be aware that despite our efforts, no security measures are perfect or impenetrable, and no method of data transmission can be guaranteed against any interception or other type of misuse.

Any information disclosed online is vulnerable to interception and misuse by unauthorised parties. Therefore, we cannot guarantee complete security if you provide personal information.

6. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies to maintain your authentication session and remember your preferences. Specifically, we use:

  • Authentication Cookies: To keep you signed in and maintain your session when you use our service
  • Analytics: We do not use analytics or advertising cookies. We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies, and record clicks to brand websites on our own servers
  • Preference Cookies: To remember your settings and preferences
  • Browser Storage (localStorage / sessionStorage): We use your browser’s local storage for your sign-in session and a small number of on-device features. Your sign-in tokens are kept here and sent to our servers to keep you signed in; the items below stay on your device and are never sent to us. Each one is cleared when you sign out (where you have an account) or after the retention period below, whichever is sooner. You can also clear it manually at any time through your browser’s storage settings.
    • Recently visited brands per category — for each subcategory you have explored in the last 7 days, we record the brand name, slug, logo URL and the time of the visit, so we can occasionally suggest brands you might want to upvote. Pruned automatically after 7 days.
    • Repeat-visit detection per (brand, subcategory) — when you click through to a brand’s website from a subcategory page, we record the brand slug, the subcategory slug, the time of your most recent click, a list of short tab-local identifiers used to detect when you return in a different browser session (see “Tab session identifier” below), and a flag noting whether we have already shown you the related upvote prompt for that pair. For signed-in users this is cleared on signout. For anonymous visitors it is retained for up to 90 days from the most recent click before being pruned automatically.
    • Tab session identifier (sessionStorage) — a single random identifier generated locally and kept only for the lifetime of the browser tab. It is used solely to recognise when you click the same brand again in a different session. It is never transmitted and is discarded when you close the tab.
    • A mirror of your own upvotes so the site stays in sync without needing to re-fetch. Cleared on signout.
    • Once-per-session UI flags such as whether you have already seen a particular prompt this session. Cleared when you close the tab.
    None of this information is sent to our servers, used for advertising, or shared with third parties. Caps apply to all of the above to prevent unbounded growth.

Most browsers are set to accept cookies by default. You can remove or reject cookies through your browser settings, but be aware that such action may affect the availability and functionality of the site, particularly authentication features.

Our website contains links to brand websites and other third-party websites. When you click on these links, you will be directed to websites that are not operated by us. We have no control over, and assume no responsibility for, the content, privacy policies, or practices of any third-party websites or services.

We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party websites you visit. Any information you provide to these third parties is not covered by this Privacy Policy, and we cannot guarantee the safety and privacy of your information once you leave our website.

9. Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as necessary to provide our services and fulfil the purposes described in this Privacy Policy. Specifically:

  • Account information is retained while your account is active
  • If you delete your account, we delete your account, your upvotes and any brand account access. Newsletter subscriptions, donation and sponsorship records are kept separately until you ask us to remove them, except where we are required to retain them for legal or regulatory purposes
  • Contact form submissions may be retained for record-keeping and customer service purposes
  • Click and search records, and upvotes cast while signed out, are kept with the IP address they came from so we can count clicks and votes for brands and prevent duplicates

10. Children's Privacy

Our service is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under age 13 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information as quickly as possible.

11. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time in order to reflect changes to our practices or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.

You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes. Changes to this Privacy Policy are effective when they are posted on this page.
