A Brief History of British Made Scarves
Scarves and neck wraps have long been worn in Britain for warmth against cold, damp weather, and the country's textile history is closely tied to them. Machine knitting has English roots. The stocking frame, the first knitting machine, is traditionally credited to William Lee of Calverton in Nottinghamshire in 1589, although much of the story rests on later tradition. Framework knitting spread over the following centuries and became an early stage in the mechanisation of textiles. In Scotland, Bailie John Hardie brought the first knitting frames to Hawick in 1771. By the 1870s Hawick was internationally known for high-quality knitted garments, and the town is still the main centre of the Scottish Borders knitwear industry. Woven wraps have their own history. From the early nineteenth century, weavers in Paisley produced patterned shawls inspired by Kashmir designs. By the 1830s the town's output was so large that the shawls became known simply as 'Paisleys'. British makers today continue to draw on these knitting and weaving traditions to produce scarves in wool and other natural fibres.
