A Brief History of British Made Jeans

Jeans began in the United States as hard-wearing work trousers. In 1873 Jacob Davis, a tailor, and Levi Strauss were granted a US patent for using metal rivets to strengthen the pocket corners of work trousers, the date Levi Strauss & Co. treats as the birth of the blue jean. The word denim comes from the French serge de Nîmes, a cloth named after the town of Nîmes in southern France, though that cloth was probably not the same as the cotton twill used for jeans today. Today several workshops make jeans in Britain. Blackhorse Lane Ateliers cuts and sews selvedge and raw denim jeans in Walthamstow, east London, and names its fits after London postcodes. Hiut Denim Co. makes jeans in Cardigan, west Wales, and Joe and Co Denim makes its jeans in the North West of England. Much of the denim these makers use is woven in Japan, Italy or Turkey, while the cutting, sewing and finishing are done in the UK.
