Braces have been part of men’s dress since the nineteenth century, when tailored trousers became a staple of everyday and formal wear. In Britain, braces became widely adopted in the Victorian era as a practical alternative to belts; they helped keep high-waisted trousers in place while preserving the clean lines desired in formal and tailored dress. Early braces were typically made from woven fabrics with leather ends and attached to buttons inside the waistband. Throughout the twentieth century, braces remained associated with classic British tailoring — worn with lounge suits and formalwear as a mark of both comfort and sartorial precision. While belts became more common in casual dress, braces continued to be a signature detail in traditional British menswear, particularly among bespoke tailors and heritage clothiers.
