Withnell was founded by Paula Roworth in Lancashire, northern England, with the brand launching its online store around 2022 (celebrating 2 years in late 2024). Paula learned to sew as a child—first in primary school, then on her mother's vintage Singer treadle machine—and made her own clothes through school. After studying fashion/textiles and working in the industry, she became disillusioned with fast fashion's ethics and environmental impact. During the Covid period, following her mother's passing, she decided to start her own ethical brand from a home studio (later expanded to a garden studio). Named after the historic local parish meaning "the hill where willow trees grow," Withnell reflects Paula's love of nature, nostalgia, vintage design, and responsible production—all UK-sourced where possible, handmade to order, and focused on simplicity and enduring style.
