Clay, Colour & Care: A Conversation with Sinem Celik of BluCeramics

“It started, as these things often do, with a cup.” Sinem Celik didn’t begin her career as a ceramicist. With a background in chemical engineering and over a decade in the corporate fashion world, it was a quiet encounter with a handmade cup in a café that changed everything. That single object sparked what would become BluCeramics—a slow, personal journey into the world of clay, form, and feeling. Working from her studio just outside Istanbul, Sinem now shapes a collection of functional, quietly beautiful ceramics: cups, bowls, platters and vases, all made by hand. Her work balances rawness and refinement—earthy textures meet precise stripes, bold glazes meet unglazed clay. We spoke with Sinem about the life lessons hidden in the craft, why clay reminds her of denim, and how, sometimes, slowing down helps us find our way home.

CRAFTED TO LAST

MORE MUSINGS FROM DEEPEST DORSET I don’t know about you but it seems to me we live in a throwaway world. Nothing lasts. It drives me mad.  One of the reasons we started Maude & Fox was because we wanted to make something of genuine lasting quality, and nothing pleases me more than when people come up to me and say,
