About Lochcarron of Scotland
Lochcarron of Scotland stands as the world’s leading manufacturer of tartan, proudly rooted in a heritage that reaches back to 1892. Their story begins with a weaving factory established near Loch Carron in Wester Ross, Scotland, supported by Highland Home Industries to revitalise traditional craft skills in the Scottish Highlands and Islands. John Morris Buchan, a textile expert from a family of woollen craftsmen, was invited to manage the factory, while skilled weaver Issac Wood helped teach local men to weave. The outbreak of the Second World War temporarily halted operations but marked the beginning of what would become Lochcarron of Scotland. After the war, the brand’s revival saw the establishment of Netherdale Handloom Weavers in Galashiels, producing woven accessories and, notably, the first Strome single-width tartan in 1949. This period marked their emergence as tartan specialists. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, Lochcarron expanded its reach beyond Scotland, tapping into growing markets in Canada, the United States, and internationally. They developed new fabric qualities and recognised fashion opportunities, notably helping to host Fashion '88, which spotlighted Scottish Borders Textiles on the global stage. The acquisition of Peter Anderson Ltd in 1962 brought the Lochcarron name to a larger premises in Galashiels, further cementing their heritage dating back to 1892. A visit by The Princess Royal in 1992 commemorated their centenary milestone. In 2006, they relocated to a modern facility in Selkirk, named Waverley Mill, preserving traditional crafts while streamlining production. Though weaving ceased at the original Lochcarron mill, it remains a retail heritage site, recently relocated to the North Coast 500 route. Today, Lochcarron of Scotland is a truly global brand, renowned for over 500 authentic Scottish tartans proudly made in Scotland by skilled craftspeople. They continue to champion traditional tartan fabric manufacturing while innovating with bespoke designs for international fashion houses. From their humble beginnings to their position at the forefront of Scottish textiles, tartan remains the thread that connects their history and future. Their headquarters and weaving mill in the Scottish Borders remain a testament to their passion for authentic Scottish tartan and textile craftsmanship. Lochcarron’s team spans numerous departments across Scotland, all dedicated to maintaining their leadership in tartan manufacturing. Their extensive collection includes a wide range of products and accessories, supported by a made-to-order service tailored to individual needs. This combination of heritage, craftsmanship, and global reach defines Lochcarron of Scotland as the definitive name in authentic Scottish tartan.
