Carr and Westley is a distinguished British clothing brand with a rich heritage dating back to 1919. They have been dedicated to clothing women across Britain for over a century, focusing on garments thoughtfully designed for fit, style, and comfort. Their journey began in a small Central London workshop, where they carved out a niche producing smart daywear including occasion dresses and faux leather jackets, catering to the city’s movers and shakers. Their reputation for quality fashion design steadily grew until World War II brought significant challenges. When their original workshop was destroyed during the Blitz, they relocated temporarily to St Ives, Cornwall, contributing to the war effort. After the war, rather than return to London, they chose to establish themselves in the Kentish countryside by renovating an 11th Century watermill into their new workshop. This historic move marked a new chapter, blending heritage with their evolving craft. Within this watermill, the original milling machinery was replaced by sewing machines, cutting tables, and stock storage. They continued their tradition of community engagement by recruiting and training local women as seamstresses—a practice they maintain today alongside employing customer service representatives from the same community. Their approach to design remains rooted in what they call "considered design," prioritising garments that fit, feel, and look great. Their extensive experience informs their understanding of how clothes should accommodate and flatter the natural female figure, focusing on comfort and style in equal measure. Carr and Westley’s enduring values centre around great fit and quality. They extend their expertise beyond their own label by supplying other classic brand names such as Poppy, Lebek, and Marble. However, their commitment is clear: if a garment does not fit comfortably while looking fantastic, they will not stock it. This ensures that customers can always find something to wear with confidence. Since 1955, Carr and Westley has remained family-owned and run, with all their skirts, trousers, and dresses still designed and made on site at Bourne Mill in Hadlow, Kent. Their dedicated, locally-employed team, many of whom have family histories intertwined with the brand’s own, supports this longstanding tradition.
