Barrington Ayre Shirtmaker & Tailor was founded by Tom Wharton, who established the brand out of a passion for clothing and a desire to create an exceptional tailoring experience. Tom always loved clothes and valued the freedom to dress in designs and fits that reflect personal style. Recognising that traditional tailoring, especially on Savile Row, often felt intimidating and unwelcoming, they set out to offer the finest tailoring in a relaxed, inviting environment where customers could truly enjoy the process of creating their clothing.
Located in Cirencester, Barrington Ayre’s showroom is designed to feel like a comfortable retreat rather than a formal tailor’s shop. The space features a beautiful handmade blue Chesterfield sofa where visitors can relax while exploring fabrics and designs. To enhance the welcoming atmosphere, the showroom offers tea, coffee, wine, beer, and even a gin and whisky bar for guests who fancy a tipple. A large TV is available for watching sport, contributing to the relaxed vibe. The showroom is a place where customers can feel at ease, embodying the belief that the experience of having clothing made is part of the joy of wearing it.
Adding to the warm atmosphere, Tom’s dog Monty is often present in the showroom. Monty is described as a placid companion who enjoys a bit of fuss but mostly prefers resting in the sun or by the heater during colder days.
In January 2020, Barrington Ayre expanded by taking over the second floor of their building, which now houses their offices and workroom. Here they produce their own range of unstructured clothing, further broadening their tailoring offerings.
The brand has gained recognition through celebrity and sports star endorsements. Their clothing has been worn on TV by notable figures such as Dan Walker from the BBC, Robbie Savage, Mark Chapman, Charles Dagnall, David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd, and Michael Vaughan. The relationship with Michael Vaughan began around 15 years ago when they made suits for him, and his enthusiasm led to word-of-mouth recommendations among friends and peers, steadily growing their reputation.
Barrington Ayre also offers a bespoke ladies clothing service, with clients including Nadiya Bychkova from Strictly Come Dancing, Chemmy Alcott, a former skier and BBC commentator, Bev Turner, Tonia Buxton from news broadcasting, and Sarah Stirk from Sky Sports. Additionally, they have welcomed Georgie Fenn, a blogger and Instagram personality known as Winning Away the Weekend, to the showroom to create her first bespoke suit.
Beyond the Cirencester showroom, Barrington Ayre provides a visiting tailoring service across the UK, regularly visiting London, Devon, Wales, Macclesfield, and the Alderley Edge area. They encourage potential clients to visit the showroom to explore their recent creations or simply to experience their unique tailoring environment.
Barrington Ayre’s story is one of combining expert tailoring with a warm, approachable atmosphere, making bespoke clothing an enjoyable and personal experience. Their dedication to craftsmanship and customer comfort sets them apart in the tailoring world.
